Dressing up a gift card

We have had a rash of weddings and babies in our circle of friends lately, and it seems to get harder and harder to select gifts. Even with gift registries I am torn between the practical and the pretty, the traditional and the latest craze. Recently, we had a shower for a new bride and groom at our church which was a gift card shower. What a way to ease my pain! All I had to do was select the card style and amount and I was done. I decided to take care of a couple more at the same store. Three gifts in 10 minutes! I looked at the cute holders for gift cards, but decided that I could create my own one-of-a-kind gift card holder for each recipient. I could also create several of these to cut down on labor time.

I chose white card stock since I could change the texture plate and ribbon for the occasion.

Supplies
Cardtstock, 5″ X 8″ NOTE: If your gift card is mounted on a separate card, you may have to trim the edges or adjust your cardstock width. I was able to trim mine 1/8″ and round the corners.
Score-it-all scoring board or bone folder and ruler
Cuttlebug and Cuttlebug button edge texture plate
Organdy ribbon, 18″ long
Be Creative double stick tape
Scissors
Xacto knife
Corner rounder

Directions
1. Score cardstock at 2 1/4″ and 5 1/2″ and 1/2″ on each 8″ side.

Right side is top flap, left is pocket flap.

2. Fold along all score lines. On the 2 1/2″ panel, cut two 45° angles on the edge and two 45° angles at the fold to create flaps. Trim away 1/2″ fold on both remaining sides.

3. Place Cuttlebug Edge Texture plate on 2 1/4″ edge. Line up on base plate and tape in place to make sure it remains in place and run through Cuttlebug.

4. Cut two 1″ (or whatever your ribbon width is + 1/4″) parallel slits. Thread ribbon through slit.

5. Place double-stick tape on flaps and fold up to back to create pocket.

6. Insert gift card.

7. Fold top flap down, round corners and tie ribbon.

There are several variations which could be applied to this design.
1. Add a tiny tag with the recipient’s name to the ribbon.
2. Trim the inside pocket with decorative scissors to allow more of the gift card to show through.
3. Make the card holder smaller to accommodate the card alone.
4. Leave the ribbon off and add a velcro dot to the inside with a stamped tag on the outside.

You can spend a lot of time shopping or zip in and out of the store and spend 30 minutes making several of these holders to have on hand. That means more time for being creative!

Have a wonderful week!
