summer vacation 2005

A few years ago, by hubby and I took a fabulous vacation that began in Rocky Mountain National Park, then meandered around through 17 states and 9 National Parks and covered 9,000 miles. That was one doozie of a trip. I was so glad to have my digital camera because I would have had more in film and developing costs than we spent for diesel, and that was the first time I every paid more than $4 for a gallon! Talk about sticker shock! Anyway, the photos required seven CDs, so that trip would have required several volumes of scrapbooks had I printed and journaled all I wanted. (more…)

Good things come in small packages….

paperweight 1©

I learned a long time ago that sometimes the smaller the package, the more exciting the gift. My first watch, which I just HAD to have at age 11, was tucked in the tiniest box under the tree, and I didn’t even know it was there until Christmas morning.

My good friend Barbara Rankin taught a cool class several months ago where we used a magnetic base with an acrylic topper for custom paperweights. We used scrapbook paper and stamps for that one, but yesterday I was looking around for something made of glass to try out my newest Viva Glass Effect Gel pens and ran across this paperweight that was an extra from the class. This is the title of one of my favorite George Carlin routines and something that I live by. When dear hubby Larry wants to sell the house and travel around the country for a couple of years, “I gotta have a place for my stuff.” When he wants to move to a smaller home and have less grass to mow, “I gotta have a place for my stuff.” When he says my studio would make a great media room….well, I just gotta have a place for my stuff. Well, not really like the lottery or anything, but this product is so cool! I was cleaning my studio today (story of my life) and came across a package of it that was never properly stored. Properly stored means I know where I put it and can find it when I need it.

The product is called Stampbord. It is a thin piece of Masonite which is coated with clay. You can ink it, stamp it, emboss it, paint it and/or spritz it. Just about anything that you use to add color or create an image with can be used on this product and it comes in several sizes. My favorite technique is to stamp an image in black, use lots of color and scratch out highlights. (more…)

I belong to a very creative group of women in the Memphis, Tennessee area known as the River City Stampers. This group includes owners of two stamp companies, four Craft and Hobby Association Designer Members and several members who are on design teams for manufacturers and online groups as well as regular contributors to magazines. They really get my creative juices flowing! (more…)

mousketeers w copyright

When I was a child, I loved the Mickey Mouse Club. My sister and I would rush home from school every day to see Annette, Tommy, Cheryl, Darlene and all the other Mouseketeers.

I loved the serials, too, and can still sing the song from one of the few scary ones: “Gold doubloons and pieces of eight, (more…)

…that he really wanted a cool house, so I came up with a one-of-a-kind design.

This birdhouse is made to stay inside, but you could give it a coat of Krylon Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze and it would be ok outside. (more…)

In Wednesday’s post, I mentioned that my sister-in-law and brother-in-law were celebrating 54 years of wedded bliss. These two are in their 70s but you’d never know it. Over the years they have participated in square dancing, dirt biking (more…)

Selecting Colors

art journal

Do you ever have trouble selecting colors for a layout? I usually have a problem narrowing down the list, but my choices for any layouts this weekend have to be simple. I will be doing any crafting with one hand because I had rotator cuff surgery yesterday. Luckily, it’s my left shoulder, but hunting and pecking with my right hand alone makes (more…)

Where in the world did I put that ATC?

Spring ATC

I love artist trading cards (ATCs) almost as much as I love making large art. ATCs are limited to 2 1/2″ X 3 1/2″, and the rules are that they cannot be sold, only traded, thus the title, Artist TRADING Cards. In the past few years, I have seen artists sell these in galleries and can only assume that they and the gallery owners are ignorant of the rules. Enough of my soapbox. (more…)
